Published in 1971, and perhaps inspired by the “save our planet” mindset of the 1960s, The Lorax is an ecological warning that still rings true today amidst the dangers of clear-cutting, pollution, and disregard for the earth’s environment. 10,000 Days $18.98 In an age where major labels dictate that new releases from bands appear on record store shelves every 18 months or so, rare is the artist given freedom and ability to reflect and stretch out to explore creative evolution and release music as an artist, rather than the prepackaged predictability of an entertainer. Thankfully, Tool has somehow managed to circumvent these rituals, releasing a record every four to five years as they so feel the need. This ability to patiently craft their musical direction has paid off for not only the band, but for listeners, as they’ve been able to expand their musical vocabulary from album to album with great precision, all the while remaining true to the foundations that built such a loyal, if not cult-like, following. But with this absence comes changes to the popular music landscape, as new bands and sounds (as well as a new generation of heavy metal fans to entertain) replace and stimulate the charts. Namely: a lot can happen in five years, especially with a fickle rock audience that is overinundated with constant new bands’ songs. The group defied expectations (and even got radio airplay) with Lateralus, but would fans stick with them during the hiatus? There were moments when Maynard James Keenan would emerge courtesy of A Perfect Circle, and there were also several stunning video DVDs to pacify while 10,000 Days was being written, along with cryptic messages via their website, but that was about it.Thankfully, 10,000 Days was worth the labor pains and wait to deliver. It’s not only a step forward for the band, but a re-embracing of the epic-length rock songs found at the roots of early heavy metal. The album starts out with “Vicarious,” which features some of Maynard’s most straightforward lyrics since ? nema’s “Hooker with a Penis.” Essentially a biting commentary on reality television, information stimulus overload, and living through others’ experiences, it’s only a brief glimpse of what’s to come, as 10,000 Days als… |

1961-1990: A Complete Career Anthology $36.98 To most casual listeners, Del Shannon was a one-hit (or, at best, two-hit) wonder. This two-CD anthology goes a long way toward correcting that inaccurate perception, covering virtually every high point in a career that, admittedly with some ups and downs, yielded some great and popular music across nearly 30 years. Every phase of the late singer/composer/guitarist’s career is represented, and though “Runaway is usually the only song associated with Shannon, this collection reveals many other sides to his work and sound, from the romantic Shannon original “Jody” to the defiant Pomus-Shuman song “Ginny in the Mirror.”The really good part about this set is that a lot of the songs appear here in their rare stereo mixes. With most classic rock & roll, that would not necessarily be a virtue, stereo being superfluous as well as harmful to its impact, but in Shannon’s case it is — his records usually featured very busy, complex instrumental parts (an attribute that he shared in common with the Beatles and a lot of other British invasion acts) that can be discerned much more easily in the stereo versions. All of the bases are covered right up through his work in the late ’60s with Andrew “Loog” Oldham and into the 1970s and 1980s obscurities. His version of the Zombies’ hit “Tell Her No” (cut for Island Records in the mid-’70s) and the Dave Edmunds-produced “And the Music Plays On” are represented, along with the results of his collaboration with Tom Petty and his comeback with the early-’80s NBC television series Crime Story (which returned “Runaway,” used as the show’s title theme, to the charts). As is usual with Raven Records, the annotation is extremely thorough and the mastering is impeccable. ~ Bruce Eder, Rovi |

Arizona Motel $17.98 Frontman and co-founder Chris Gaffney’s untimely death in April 2008 ensures that Arizona Motel is the final release from this rootsy country-soul quintet. Unfortunately, the band was just starting to receive national recognition due to constant touring when Gaffney was diagnosed with liver cancer. At least they had time to record a final set and leave on a high note, as this album is a logical continuation of the two previous studio projects and one live disc. Gaffney is in fine form, singing the majority of the songs and infusing them with his heartfelt honesty. Opener “A Lot of Days Are Gone” is particularly affecting, especially in retrospect. On it, guitar-slinging shotgun rider Dave Gonzalez trades lead vocals as Gaff sings “There was always time, but now it’s slipped away” for a honky tonk ballad that can also be seen as a moving summary of Gaffney’s life. The legendary Dan Penn, who produced both previous studio sets, returns for five (of the 14) tracks, and he wrote two of those, including the closing “Break Free,” which features one of Gaffney’s most emotional vocals. The rest are credited to the band, which keeps the sound appropriately stripped down yet not raw. The twangy R&B approach is best captured on the ballad “Ordinary Soul,” a weeper that hits the sweet spot between genres as effectively as any in the group’s catalog. It’s highlighted by guest Joe Terry’s (Dave Alvin, the Skeletons) piano, a subtle yet essential addition to the majority of these songs. The members get a rare chance to solo on “Light It Again Charlie,” the only instrumental and one of the few instances where Gonzalez opens up on guitar. “Soul Mountain” balances between country, blues, and gospel on an upbeat shuffle offset by the rest of the typically slower tunes. A few covers highlighted by Connie Smith’s “I’ll Come Running” and Hank Williams’ “When You’re Tired of Breaking Other Hearts” pepper the disc, and Gaffney dips into George Jones’ expressive territory… |

Awaken the Guardian [Bonus DVD] $15.98 Recorded in 1986, Awaken the Guardian was not Fates Warning’s first album — it was actually their third. Awaken the Guardian was, however, the first Fates Warning album to chart in Billboard — and it was an album that turned a lot of headbangers into Fates Warning fans. Nineteen years after the original LP release of Awaken the Guardian, Metal Blade provided this special collectors’ edition — and what started out as a vinyl LP in 1986 became, in late June 2005, a three-disc set (two audio CDs and a live DVD video). While disc one is a straight reissue of Awaken the Guardian (it contains the same eight songs in the same order) and disc two consists of both live material and demos, the DVD focuses on a December 28, 1986 show in Long Island NY (where Fates Warning perform a combination of songs from Awaken the Guardian and their two previous albums Night on Brocken and The Spectre Within). Unfortunately, the DVD isn’t a professionally filmed video, but its inclusion is still a good thing because it gives headbangers a rare chance to actually see (as opposed to simply hearing) the band during their John Arch era. Arch’s high-pitched lead vocals are — much like the vocals of Rush’s Geddy Lee — an acquired taste. Some found Arch, like Lee, to be shrill and said the same thing about Ray Alder when he replaced Arch in 1987. But Arch has plenty of admirers, and headbangers who appreciate his piercing wail generally agree that Awaken the Guardian is the best album that Fates Warning recorded during their Arch period (when they had yet to fully express their interest in progressive rock). This deluxe package is not recommended to casual listeners but rather, was designed for collectors and Fates Warning’s most hardcore fans — and those who fit that description will find a lot to enjoy about Metal Blade’s three-disc version of Awaken the Guardian, Rovi |

Christmas Wish [Deluxe Edition] $18.99 In 1980, NRBQ entered the lucrative seasonal music market with the EP Christmas Wish, in which the ever-eccentric combo offered up eight holiday-themed tunes ranging from the respectful and charming (the lovely title tune, which appeared twice) to the wildly off-kilter (“Here Comes Santa Claus” played on a very curious sounding electronic keyboard, and a live recording of “Jingle Bells” as pulled from the “Magic Box” request basket at a 1980 live show). Since then, NRBQ have expanded Christmas Wish to a full LP, bulked out to 19 tracks and growing from less than 12 minutes to over 32. However, bigger isn’t always better, and a lot of the material the Q have plucked from the vaults to fill this out isn’t much to write home about. While the version of Vince Guaraldi’s “Christmas Time Is Here” is that rare recording that won’t make you think of A Charlie Brown Christmas, “Holiday” is a neat Yuletide original from Terry Adams, and Al Anderson’s bah-humbug interpretation of “The Christmas Song” will amuse the less spirited, much of the rest of the disc comes from live recordings with NRBQ and the Whole Wheat Horns stumbling through songs of the season with a deliberate sloppiness that doesn’t amuse much when removed from its original context, or from home recordings that sound decidedly unfinished. Fans of NRBQ have long known to expect something a little off the wall from these guys, and the expanded Christmas Wish sure fits that bill, but from one of America’s most consistently creative bands this hodgepodge is something of a letdown. [A Deluxe Edition was also released.] ~ Mark Deming, Rovi |

Handel: Violin Sonata in D HWV371; Violin Sonata in F HWV370 (doubtful) $11.99 Recordings of Handel’s violin sonatas as a group are rare, perhaps because the canon of authentic ones is difficult to pin down. This album, originally issued in 2003 and rereleased at an attractive budget price by Virgin Classics in 2010, includes the Violin Sonata in A major, HWV 372, and Violin Sonata in F major, HWV 370, in spite of a notation on each sonata in a contemporary copy that reads unambiguously: “NB This is not Mr. Handel’s.” Both are competent essays in the Italian style Handel brought to Britain, but to have the frame of the program, as violinist Hiro Kurosaki does here, is a questionable decision; they aren’t on a level with the genuine Handel pieces. For the real thing, sample the Allegro of the Violin Sonata in D major, HWV 371, and observe how the intervals defined in the first few bars of the music very quickly fall into dense manipulation without losing the cheery aspect of the music. Or the splendidly operatic slow movement of the Violin Sonata in A major, HWV 361 (track 15). Another unorthodox choice here, although one backed in this case by documentary evidence, is the simple continuo accompaniment, only a harpsichord or small organ, without the usual cello or gamba. Generally performers have ignored the notation in the original publication of these works, specifying a “Thorough Bass for the Harpsichord or Bass Violin,” reasoning that the bass-violin-alone option doesn’t make a lot of sense and that the publisher was trying to leave as many options open as possible to boost sales. Playing them with a keyboard only places the emphasis on the soloist; even with the agile accompaniment of William Christie, it sounds spare. All this said, the playing of Hiro Kurosaki on the Baroque violin is at least the equal of the other versions circulating (also sample that by Andrew Manze). The brisk, slashing fast movements and very vocal adagios and larghettos remain state of the art as of the reissue date. The bizarrely bright, harsh sound is a d… |

Johann Sebastian Bach: Triosonatas for Organ BWV 525-530 $16.98 The booklet notes by Ton Koopman, who produced this release, issued it on his Antoine Marchand (that’s French for “Ton Koopman”) imprint, and featured on keyboard his wife, Tini Mathot, speak of “an effort to recover some of the lost chamber music of the Leipzig cantor,” Johann Sebastian Bach. It’s indeed likely that Bach wrote a lot of chamber music that has since been lost, but this arrangement of Bach’s organ trio sonatas is really something other than a pure attempt at transcription. There are quite a few arrangements of these trio sonatas for chamber ensemble; naturally enough, for Bach was himself imitating a chamber genre on the keyboard in this set of works. The majority of such arrangements, however, use the typical trio sonata grouping of two melody instruments (often two violins, or violin and flute). This one, along with various others, uses one melody instrument plus keyboard, with the right hand of the keyboard part serving as a partner to the melody instrument rather than to its own left hand, something in itself fairly typical of Bach’s contrapuntal thinking. Where recorder player Reine-Marie Verhagen and Mathot break new ground is in the use of an organ in three of the six sonatas; the other three are played on a recorder and harpsichord. This complicates the range of possibilities still more, for a listener in Bach’s time would have perceived a kinship between the sound of the recorder and that of the organ. Even now, the right hand of the organ enters the listener’s consciousness as a second wind instrument, and the original trio sonata texture of the music is emphasized — more so than in the pieces played on a harpsichord. The problem with calling this a “recovery” of Bach chamber music is that the recorder-organ combination was a rare one in Bach’s time. But as a speculative endeavor intended to explore how the ear follows counterpoint and texture in Bach’s music, it’s fascinating. The players are terrific: lively, clear, and crisp. An… |
